John James has, since 1986, provided professional planning and design services to more than 600 public and private clients in Virginia and the District of Columbia.
His projects have ranged in size and complexity from small residential landscapes to college campus planning; from historic site preservation to town planning; from re-inventing small garden spaces to large estate master plans.
John’s guiding principles are:
  • creative response to environmental, economic and regulatory constraints
  • assistance in maintaining and improving the viability of communities, including small towns, neighborhoods and special districts
  • respect for site conditions, both natural and cultural
  • support and encouragement of resource conservation
  • treatment of the design of the site and its architecture as integral
  • design that will endure in function and beauty
